A collision domain is a physical section of a network in which the signals from various devices may collide. Devices sharing the same medium or connected through hubs or repeaters run the risk of collisions. Bridges and switches regulate traffic intelligently and break networks into smaller collision domains. The goal is to keep collision domains as small as possible in order to minimize collisions.
